Raynor Torsion Spring Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

A Raynor torsion spring replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $210 to $400 installed, and most homes we service are back in working order the same day we arrive. The spring is the counterweight system mounted on a metal rod above your closed garage door. When it breaks, the door won’t lift, and you’ll usually hear it happen: a loud bang from the garage that sounds like a dropped wrench or a car backfiring. The door then becomes dead weight, often stuck halfway or refusing to budge even with the opener straining against it.

Which Raynor Models This Applies To

We replace torsion springs on the full Raynor residential lineup we see across Los Angeles: the Advantage series, AP series, AlumaView, DecoEdge, and the Pilot line that shows up on a lot of mid-2010s homes. The spring isn’t one-size-fits-all even within a series. Raynor doors ship with springs sized to the door’s exact weight and height, so a 16×7 AP 138 uses a different wire gauge and coil count than a 9×7 Pilot. The only reliable way to match it is the spring tag on the existing hardware, or failing that, the door model label on the jamb and a measurement of the spring’s wire diameter with a gauge. We do both before quoting, because guessing here is how you get doors that jerk, bind, or eat openers.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Raynor’s OEM springs are well-made, but the aftermarket equivalents we source from the same US spring manufacturers match or exceed the cycle rating in most cases. We carry both. If your door is under warranty and Raynor will cover the part, we’ll tell you and help you file it. If not, we’ll install a spring rated for 10,000 to 25,000 cycles depending on what you want to pay, and we’ll show you the manufacturer spec before we touch anything.

Signs Your Raynor Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Raynor Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing
  • The door opens a few inches and stops, or reverses. A broken spring removes the counterweight, so the opener hits its force limit immediately. If you watch the spring shaft from inside the garage, you’ll see a visible gap in the coil where the break happened.
  • A loud bang from the garage. Springs fail under tension and release it all at once. It’s the single most common way Los Angeles owners realize something’s wrong, often at 7am on a workday.
  • The door is visibly uneven when moving. Raynor doors with two-spring systems can have one break and one hold, leaving the door cocked sideways and grinding against the track.
  • The opener motor runs but the door doesn’t move. If the spring can’t help lift, the opener can’t either. You’ll hear the motor humming or the belt jerking and the door just sits there.
  • You can see a gap in the spring coil itself. If you stand inside the garage and look at the horizontal spring above the door, a broken spring shows a clean separation, often with a visible stretch or twist near the break.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Across Los Angeles, we quote $210 to $400 for a Raynor torsion spring replacement, parts and labor included, with the final number depending on three things: whether your door uses a single spring or a pair, the spring’s wire diameter and cycle rating, and whether we’re doing the work at 3pm or 3am. Emergency calls run toward the top of that range. Every quote includes the spring, winding and balancing the door, lubricating the rollers and hinges if they need it, and testing the full open/close cycle before we leave.

The price you’re quoted is the price on the invoice. Clause 1 of The Haven Standard means we hand you a written price and written scope before any work starts, and that number doesn’t move unless we find something else you approve separately. It’s why we photograph the failed spring before quoting a replacement (that’s Clause 4), and why Marcus Deller keeps a copy of the manufacturer torque specs in the truck. You see the break. You see the spec. Then we do the work.

DIY or Call Us?

Torsion springs are the one part of a garage door system where the DIY conversation needs to end early. The spring is wound under hundreds of pounds of torque, and the release or mis-winding of that tension has put more than a few determined homeowners in the ER. We don’t coach people through winding bars and set screw sequences. What you can safely do: check for the broken coil, note the Raynor model label on the jamb, and stop pressing the opener button. What you shouldn’t do: touch the winding cones, loosen any red-painted hardware, or try to get the door up manually with a broken spring, because the weight can come down hard.

That said, the inspection and quote don’t cost you a thing. Call (213) 348-6550, and we’ll send a technician with a spring gauge, the right replacement on the truck, and a written price before you approve a single bolt turning.
