Amarr Torsion Spring Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

An Amarr torsion spring replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $210-$400 installed, and we stock compatible springs for Amarr’s full residential line on our trucks, so most jobs are finished the same visit. The spring is the counterweight system mounted on the metal bar above your closed door - it stores tension and does most of the lifting, so when it fails, the door gets heavy fast. You’ll usually know it happened before you see it: a bang from the garage that sounded like someone dropped a toolbox from a ladder. After that, the opener strains against the dead weight or just refuses to move it at all.

Which Amarr Models This Applies To

We work on the full Amarr residential range across Los Angeles: the Lincoln and Heritage series steel doors, the Classica and Stratford carriage-house styles, and the Olympus line that’s common in newer builds and mid-century remodels alike. The compatibility gotcha with Amarr is that spring sizing isn’t a one-piece-fits-all part number - Amarr doors ship with springs matched to the door’s weight, height, and drum profile, so a spring from a Lincoln 1000 isn’t necessarily right for a Stratford 3000 even if the doors look identical from the curb. That’s why we measure wire diameter, inside diameter, length, and wind direction before quoting anything, not after.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: genuine Amarr springs are well made, and we can source them when a customer asks. But many Amarr doors use standard torsion hardware that quality aftermarket springs from suppliers like SSC or ServiTech match properly, often at a better price for the same wire spec and cycle rating. We’ll tell you which is which on your door, show you the measured spring before we touch it, and give you a flat written price either way under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard.

Signs Your Amarr Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Amarr Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing
  • A loud bang from the garage, then the opener won’t lift the door. This is the classic spring break - one of the two springs snaps at a coil, and the remaining spring can’t hold the door’s weight alone. The opener’s force setting trips and it refuses to move, which is the opener protecting itself and you.
  • The door opens a few inches, then stops and reverses. A spring that’s lost tension still has some holding power, but not enough. The opener reads the resistance as an obstruction and reverses. This often gets misdiagnosed as an opener problem.
  • A visible gap in the spring coil. If you look up at the torsion bar with the door closed and see a 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch separation in one of the coils, that spring is broken. Don’t test the door after seeing this - the remaining spring is under full tension.
  • The door is heavy to lift manually, or it slams down. Pull the red emergency release cord and try lifting the door by hand. A healthy Amarr door with working springs should open smoothly with one hand. If it feels like lifting a sofa, the springs have failed or are near failure.
  • Creaking, popping, or grinding when the door moves. This is usually friction - a tired spring binding against the shaft, a dry bearing, or a cable wearing against a worn drum. Left alone, the friction turns into metal fatigue, and metal fatigue turns into the bang. In neighborhoods closer to the coast like Playa del Rey or Mar Vista, salt air accelerates this wear, and we see doors needing spring replacement a year or two earlier than inland homes.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, an Amarr torsion spring replacement is $210-$400 installed, and the range comes down to a few things: whether you’re replacing one spring or both, the wire gauge and cycle rating of the spring, and whether the job needs supporting work like new cables or a center bearing while we’re up there. We always recommend replacing both springs even when only one broke - they were installed on the same day, they’ve cycled the same number of times, and the second one is on the same clock.

Every quote includes the spring or springs, the labor, and a written warranty on the work. The price is flat and written before anything comes off the bar - not an estimate, not a range, not a “we’ll see how it goes.” You’ll also get a documented photo record of the failed spring before replacement and the new hardware after, per Clause 4 of The Haven Standard. That’s not an upsell. It’s how we’ve closed every job since 2015.

We’ll be direct: replacing a torsion spring is not a homeowner job. The springs are wound under hundreds of pounds of torque, and the winding bars used to adjust them can turn into a projectile if you slip. We recommend calling a trained technician for this repair - Marcus Deller and our crew carry the right winding bars, the right gauges, and we’ve done this over 18,000 times since 2015.

What you can safely do: check the spring for a visible gap, note the make and model of your door from the label on the inside edge of the top panel, and look for a sticker on the spring itself with a wire size. That information speeds up the phone call. Then call us at (213) 348-6550 - we’ll ask what you saw, name the price range before we dispatch, and send a technician who shows up with the spring and a written scope.
